A group of researches focused on the better management of terrestrial waters is promoted by specialists of hydraulic resources in the province of Holguin, among the projects prioritized by the sector in Cuba.
These studies include hydrological maps, safe waste treatment and efficiency in the use of the vital liquid, chapters related to the preservation of subterranean sources and care of the environment.
They also have as a premise the application of science and technological innovation to improve services to the population, to face intense droughts and the effects of climate change, among others facts.
Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, territorial delegate of Hydraulic Resources, told the ACN that the province already has results such as a map of the coastal area of the municipality of Gibara, which determines the levels of saline intrusion in these areas of tourist exploitation.
He stressed that the investigations also provide approximations to the state of the relief, the hydrographic basins, the aquifer reserves and the dangers, vulnerabilities and risks of the fresh water sources.
He also emphasized that through the mapping carried out by the experts, feasibility studies for the connection of clients to the aqueduct and sewerage systems and the exploration of new wells are promoted.
Echavarría Hernández explained that they also intervene in the management of liquid waste to evacuate them in a safe way, taking into consideration the limitations in equipment and spare parts caused by the global economic crisis.
Holguín is promoting the National Hydraulic Development Program, conceived by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro, based on the works executed in the East-West Water Transfer, among them the Levisa dam, for the benefit of agriculture and rural and hard-to-reach populations.
