This February 13 is World Radio Day and CMKO Radio Angulo in Holguin, one of the longest-running radio stations in Cuba, joins the commemoration in which the creative and responsible combination of entertaining, educating, informing and preserving the Cuban identity prevails, each time with higher levels of audiences based on current communication demands.
More than eight decades on the air endorse its social reputation, reliability and popular recognition from a comprehensive communication system that articulates more than 70 interactive radio formats -musical, dramatized, informative, orientation and historical- whose main purpose is to satisfy with quality and ingenuity, immediacy and veracity the information and entertainment needs of the different audiences; now also from its digital publications and the management of social networks.
This is an occasion to recognize the democratic power and social influence of this means of communication so deeply rooted in Cuban society as a powerful vehicle that shortens distances and blurs geographical boundaries.
Since its invention, radio has been an important way to inform, educate and entertain millions of people. This special day gives us an opportunity to reflect on its impact on the world around us.

Radio continues to be the most diverse and pluralistic medium that represents all sectors of the population without exclusion. It is the voice of diversity. It has the unique ability to reach remote places where other modern technologies cannot. At the same time, it has the unique ability to reach remote places where other modern technologies cannot.
Having surpassed a centenary of existence, the occasion is propitious to commemorate the broad virtues and continuing potential of this medium of communication, which is renewed by digital platforms, social networks, the digital divide amidst dissimilar economic difficulties that test its capacity for realization and audience levels.
Proclaimed in 2011 by Unesco and adopted in 2012 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, this year’s World Radio Day focuses on the purpose of achieving greater inclusion and diversity of radio broadcasters and their messages, in order to democratize on a planetary scale the content disseminated through radio stations in all corners of the Earth.

Never more so than today has such an endeavor become an urgent necessity in the face of the hegemonic efforts of broadcasting monopolies and transnational corporations, which seek to silence the legitimate voices of the peoples and undermine their most authentic cultural and moral values.
Cuban Radio, with more than a century of existence, and for more than sixty years in the hands of a people that recognizes itself in it and in turn makes it possible, consistently assumes the high precepts that encourage this 2024 celebration of World Radio Day under the slogan: “Radio: A century of informing, entertaining and educating”.
