Holguin opened with a win and two draws in Chess Tourney

A victory and two draws was the result of Holguin this Monday in the first round of the Absolute Chess Tournament that with the presence of 26 players and by the Swiss system to 10 rounds is hosted by the Eradio Dominguez Academy of the Cuban City of the Parks.

The victory went to International Master (IM) Ríder Díaz (2440 elo points), who defeated his counterpart Jorge Marcos Gómez (2315) with black pieces.

The other two reps from Holguin drew: Grand Master (GM) Luis Manuel Perez (2316) vs his peer Lelys Martinez (2462), and FIDE Master (FM) Manuel Dario Ochoa (2401) off FM Carlos Manuel Chavez (2300).

In this initial date, the defeat of the defending champion, GM Elier Miranda (2485), who lost with dark pieces against FM César Alejandro Pérez (2331), was surprising.

The first pre-ranked player in the match, GM Carlos Daniel Albornoz (2603) defeated with white pieces FM Luis Daniel Rodriguez (2386), while the second in the ELO list GM Luis Ernesto Quesada (2560) defeated with black pieces veteran GM Juan Borges (2371).

Another of the country’s top players, GM Omar Almeida (2506) made his debut with a victory, with white pieces, vs IM Jerzy Jesus Perez (2369).

This Sunday and as a preamble to the Cuban championship, Santiago GM Lelys Martinez won the Blitz or rapid games tournament for which 47 players registered.

Lelys beat GMs Camilo Gomez (Holguin) and Carlos Daniel Alvornoz (Camaguey), all three with 7.0 points out of a possible 10.

The fourth place went to Holguin GM Walter Arencibia (6.5), as well as his fellow countryman IM Ríder Díaz and Villa Clara GM Ermes Espinosa.
