Frank País García International Airport, in the city of Holguín, is undertaking a group of investments in its facilities that will increase the regional safety of air navigation and ground operations.
Manuel Torres Chapman, head of investments of the Holguin Airport Base Business Unit, informed ACN that, according to a plan started last year and to be continued in 2024, they are working on the maintenance of several areas of the airport station, including the completion of the construction of a new control tower.
The building meets all the requirements demanded by international aviation and has first-generation equipment with software developed by workers in the sector in the country, which demonstrates the high level of technological sovereignty and the preparation of Cuban professionals, he said.
Torres Chapman commented that, in order to optimize safety during aircraft landing, the installation of a first-class approach light beaconing system continues, which will allow better illumination of the runway, to which the safety margins of the runway and taxiways are also being built.
In addition, they are continuing with the expansion of the platform, which will increase the space available for aircraft parking, with the addition of two positions for large aircraft, and the subsequent repair of the ramp, which dates back to the opening of the site, inaugurated on July 27, 1996 by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, he explained.
Other projects underway are the construction of a new Fire Station, the recovery of a container elevator for baggage containers that has been paralyzed for some time, the waterproofing of the roofs and the replacement of the false ceilings, he added.
Frank País International Airport, which underwent an extensive restructuring in 2007, is considered the gateway to the tourist destination of Holguín, where it currently handles an average of 65 operations per week, with more than ten airlines from several continents.
