Manuel Darío Ochoa qualifies for final national chess tourney

Manuel Dario Ochoa de la Rosa, FIDE Master (MF) from Holguín, led with 6,5 points, the chess tourney from Eastern (men), event that ended this Sunday in Santiago de Cuba, and thus reached one of the two tickets given for the final stage of the National Championship, slated for the three thru the 15, next February.

Ochoa De la Rosa (ELO 2,399), first in the ranking among the 10 participants, won five victories and three draws in the Santiago competition and only suffered one defeat, against Raúl Leonardo Lavigne (2,194), by the way the only smile of this player, seventh in the competition’s ELO list.

The second passport to the Holguín final was obtained by MF César Alejandro Pérez (2317), who added six points by achieving five successes with two draws and suffering two setbacks.

The other Holguín representative in the Zonal Oriental, the provincial champion Héctor Luis Fuentes (2120), finished in eighth place with four points accumulated, recording one victory, six draws and two losses.

From third to tenth places were the following chess players: MF José Avelino Álvarez (5.5), MF Brayan Torres (5.0), Evelio Amaurys Roll (4.5), MF Mario Enrique Diéguez (4.5), MF Yonisbel Rosabal (4.0), Héctor Luis Fuentes (4.0), MF Manuel Charón (2.5) and Raúl Leonardo Lavigne (2.5).

In the national final, with a new structure, the 24 players that will be taking part then will compete for the Swiss System over 10 rounds.

The eight members of the national pre-selection directly enter this decisive phase along with the current champion of the youth category, who are joined by the seven classified in the zones, two from the East, Center and West, and the best third place among the three zones.

The remaining places to complete the group of finalists are awarded to the most outstanding players associated with the national federation, regardless of where they reside, based on international titles and positions in the world ranking.

The headquarters of the chess competition will be the Provincial Sports Museum, located in the Mayor General Calixto García Iñiguez stadium.
