Holguin wins national trout fishing tournament

The representation of Holguin won the 40th edition of the national trout fishing tournament “Quema de Bayamo”, which during four days in Granma brought together participants from a dozen Cuban provinces.

In the now traditional contest that takes place in Leonero lagoon, in the municipality of Río Cauto, the second and third places went to the competitors from Villa Clara and Granma.

The first three positions, in the individual competition, went to Luis Antonio Domínguez Yero from Granma, with an accumulated 27.87 points; followed by Yosbani Alfonso Barbier (21.40) and Raúl Marrero Vidal (21.30), both from Holguin.

Alfonso Barbier, from Holguín, also won the prize in the category for the the prize for the largest fish caught, catching a 6.90-pound specimen.

With the presence of fans and donations of trout to vulnerable people, the official weighing of the catches took place at the dusk of each day of competition, in different public places of Granma province.

Along with the aforementioned teams, the tournament was attended by fishermen from Pinar del Río, Havana, Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Ávila, Camaguey, Las Tunas and Guantánamo.

Held from the 18th to the 21st, every year the event takes place as part of the activities in honor of the dignified attitude of the inhabitants of the historic city of Bayamo, who, on January 12, 1869, decided to set fire to the town before surrendering to the troops of the Spanish colonial army.

To greet the date Physical Education and Recreation from Granma also organizes the annual “12 de Enero” race, which at brings together children, grandparents, people with disabilities, paralympic athletes, or people with disabilities, professional and amateur athletes and all other people.
