Due to the breakdown of the tomograph at Lucía Iñiguez Landín clinical hospital, for some time now, the magnetic resonance equipment has been increasing its assistance capacity in order to maintain the vitality of the health services and diagnostic means. Thus, while previously between 15 and 20 patients were attended daily, nowadays more than thirty cases come to be studied.
According to the second degree specialist in Imaging, José Alberto Álvarez Cuesta, “our department has a broken tomograph, which implies the need for the MRI to work full time. This task implies a great care load, since at a given moment we have to take on a group of patients who could previously have gone through the CT scanner. Therefore, the work of the staff in charge of the operation of this equipment is intense”.
Greater use of this diagnostic tool, capable of performing advanced imaging examinations, by providing excellent image quality, implies greater wear and tear or risk of breakage, but thanks to the training and care of the technical personnel in charge of handling it, its durability is guaranteed.
The also assistant professor and researcher explains that this assistance activity is carried out paired with the dedication of the team of graduates who work there, because it is at this time when the equipment needs to be protected the most. “They are the ones who maintain its constant care,” he said.
Before the arrival of this modern procedure in 2017, those patients who demanded specialized studies of this nature were forced to go to health centers in other territories of the country. For that reason, when 2023 is almost over, one of the most complex years for the health sector, marked by the shortage of supplies and the economic crisis, alternatives are being sought to maintain the operation of vital medical equipment for the health system in Holguin.
