Para judoka Sheila Hernandez, from Holguin province, over 70 kg, won the gold medal on Monday at the VII Parapan American Games of Santiago de Chile 2023 by defeating Brazil’s Meg Rodrigues by ippon in the final.
Hernandez started with a victory by ippon against American Katie Davis in the quarterfinals, thus progressed to the semifinals. She then secured the silver medal after beating Brazil’s Rebeca de Sousa by ippon, coming back from a waza-ari lead to advance to the final.
On the same day, Yordanis Fernandez Sartre (+ 90 kg) defeated Brazil’s Wilian Silva by ippon in the final to become the champion of the Games, while Ariagna Hechevarria (70 kg) won the bronze medal.

Hernandez’s is the first judo medal winner by Holguin athletes in the Parapan American Games. The outstanding parajudoka adds this laurel to her silver in the last World Championship held in Ibsa de Baku 2022, Azerbaijan, for the blind and visually impaired.
