Angel Augier 2023 Creation Grant Awarded

The book projects “Años de Plomo”, “Imágenes en tránsito. Eduardo Manet en el campo cultural cubano (1948-1968)” and “La Isla sobredimensionada” received the Angel Augier 2023 Creation Scholarship, awarded by the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Uneac) in the province of Holguin to stimulate the literary creation of its members.

These works belong to writers from the province who reflect in their texts a notable interest in historical topics.

The book of poems “Años de Plomo”, by poet Reynaldo Zaldívar, constitutes a striking summary of the vicissitudes and conflicts that the lyrical subject has gone through during these last years, as determined in the minutes of the jury composed by Kiuder Yero Torres, Ronel González Sánchez and Manuel García Verdecia.

It was also added that this book is written with an authentic voice, different from the one usually read in today’s Holguin lyric. Each poem narrates complex social moments, and does so with sensitive and convincing images that turn the reading into a necessary reflection on the being in its course.

Its author, Reynaldo Zaldívar, is also a member of the Hermanos Saiz Association (AHS for its Spanish acronym) and has published the collections of poems “Carne Roja”, “Desequilibrio” and “País que empuja el viento”. He is currently working on these new texts that, from poetry, describe certain historical periods that have changed the social context worldwide.

In the literary essay category, the scholarship was awarded to the work of journalist and researcher Erian Peña Pupo. “Images in transit. Eduardo Manet in the Cuban cultural field (1948-1968)” is a well-founded project on the figure of this remarkable writer and filmmaker.

The work presents a lucid and informed panorama that approaches a Cuban author unfortunately cornered, in spite of having a literary and cinematographic work that has been distinguished and awarded beyond our borders. A book that, under the protection of a solid research, with interviews made by the author and his own assessment, adds useful data and perspectives for a more complex understanding of the Cuban culture of these years.

Erian Peña, also a member of the AHS, is the recipient of several awards and has published the book of poems “Puertas para huir de la casa” (Doors to flee the house) and others in the publishing process.

The historical-social essay jury, made up of Mayra San Miguel, Ariel Zaldívar and Minervino Ochoa, awarded the scholarship in this genre to the project “La Isla sobredimensionada”, by the outstanding historian and researcher José Abreu Cardet.

This book constitutes an investigative novelty, written with methodological expertise and a transgressive approach. Its author, winner of the 2018 National History Award, has published a large number of books, including “Calixto García: Military Thought and Action”, “Visions on the War of 1868” and “Eva Canel: What I Saw in Cuba”.

The authors of the winning works will work for a whole year to complete and perfect their creations.
