In the early hours of Sunday morning, the flooding of the Cabaña river surprised the residents of Moa, causing floods and generating significant material losses in several localities.

According to reports from the director of the local radio station La Voz del Níquel, Camilo Velázquez Petittón, the water level of the river rose to limits never seen before, penetrating practically all the houses in the area.

Fortunately, both the population and the authorities responded quickly and all residents were evacuated without loss of life or injury.
The people were taken to an evacuation center where they are receiving attention. However, the damage in the area is significant, especially in the Ecrin neighborhood, where there are 135 houses and 374 people, including 72 children and 28 elderly people.
The water levels inside the houses have damaged household appliances and other resources.
Maroldis Cutiño, delegate of district 10, reported on the material damages suffered by the residents.
Journalist Yulieska Hernández García of Moa TV, who has been following the situation closely, expressed her concern for the community of reparto Ecrin, where the flooding has reached a height of more than one and a half meters.
Despite the loss of belongings, no fatalities have been reported.

A tour of the neighborhood is currently underway to assess preliminary damages and design relief strategies as soon as possible.
Local authorities, including the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in Holguin province, Ernesto Santiesteban Velazquez, and Governor Manuel Hernandez Aguilera, are on site to coordinate response actions.
The Municipal Defense Council has been activated since early morning to protect the population in the most affected communities, such as Ecrin, Cabaña and La Veguita. In addition, they have conducted tours of the flooded areas in the lower area of the city, including the Popular Councils of Joselillo and 26 de Junio.
Intense rains recorded in the last 24 hours have caused flooding in low-lying areas and riverbanks, as well as landslides in the mountains.
Reported rainfall includes 205 mm in the city of Moa, 208 mm in Derivadora, 121 mm in Moa Dam and 163.3 mm in Calentura, according to Citma Moa specialist Idania Pineda.
