Detour, Holguín-Moa highway
Road circulation on the Holguín-Moa highway was reopened to traffic with extreme caution in the early hours of this morning, after the execution of a detour following the collapse of a culvert in the area of Guaro, in the municipality of Mayarí.
The work of specialized construction forces made it possible to reestablish the passage through an alternative route over a stream, after the structural failure of the metallic vault that supported the road in this construction site, near kilometer 73, in the area known as Jicotea.
Pavel Rodriguez Rodriguez, director of the Provincial Road Center, explained to the Cuban News Agency that the work, affected by the floods of the recent heavy rains, was built in the 40s of the last century, originally built for 50 years, guarantee assured, at the time, by the executor.
In its repair, said the specialist, it is foreseen to completely demolish the metallic element, and in its place to place prefabricated reinforced concrete arches, and to reduce the execution time, the existing foundations and walls will be reused.
He recommended that planned trips between Holguín and Moa, which are not essential, be postponed in order to reduce traffic flows during the execution works.
He reiterated the exhortation to road users to comply disciplinedly with the provisions of Law 109 “Road Safety Code” for these cases, as well as the complementary regulations established by the competent authorities, in addition to extreme caution.
The breakdown caused the closure of traffic on this road, considered vital because it supports the communication with the municipalities in the east of the province and the direct link with the city of Santiago de Cuba and its port, of great importance for the economy of the territory.
The road is currently undergoing an investment process that includes, fundamentally, the section from Holguín to Manguito, where the 28 kilometers of roads between those two points have already been completed, and work is being done on some paving segments.
