Cuban goldsmithing is in Iberoarte, in its XXI edition in Holguin, with Juan Carlos Milian Guardado and Havana Silver, a craftsman specialized in the art of dreaming and exclusive pieces from an aesthetic and beautiful conception as a category that leads him to international recognition. The artist, reluctant to the media and interviews, agreed to talk to this site.
What collections did you choose for the 2023 event?
“We have worked on silver collections from rings, wedding rings, earrings, chains with charms, in various designs and shapes and bracelets within the reach of all budgets. You cannot speculate with high prices”.
How do you achieve a balance between design, cost and profit?
“It’s not an easy task, not even in one day. As I am a producer I can locate and not raise prices so much. That is to say that you have minimum profits. Not to get rich.
You are always attentive to world trends and the tastes of Holguin people and Cubans in general, how do you do it?
“We make exchange with artists from other countries in the international events we attend. In Italy, in Peru, they are interested in our works, we leave them handicrafts and they pay us with their products”.
For an artist like you, is creating a necessity? Do you have any future projects?

“There are future projects that in the current context we are waiting for them to materialize. When you do something exclusive it takes a long time. And it’s difficult at the moment. There are fewer and fewer of us who do goldsmithing. Without the money we can’t work. Thanks to the fact that we have been in goldsmithing for a long time, we can travel and bring the silver. We import wires, balls, pure silver. Because it is increasingly difficult to have pure silver in Cuba. And also reuse, recycle, is another way I apply”.
Juan Carlos Milian has participated in craft fairs in Europe and Latin America with the presentation of silver collections of high aesthetic and artistic flight.
He is a member of the Cuban Fund of Cultural Goods (FCBC) with an experience of twenty years, and creator of exclusive pieces used in fashion shows at the Cuban Art Factory in Havana, at Iberoarte in Holguin and at other relevant craftsmanship events in the country.
