A scientific conference dedicated to the Latin American Dentistry Day, celebrated every year on October 3, took place on Tuesday in the city of Holguin, as part of the celebrations for the date in this eastern territory.
The event dealt with stomatological care at the primary and secondary levels, human resources training, quality of services and the impact of Covid-19 in this branch of medicine.
Aluett Niño Peña, head of the specialty at the University of Medical Sciences, told the Cuban News Agency that the meeting was a space for the socialization of new procedures and therapies, through the exchange between students and specialists.
She underlined as one of the relevant topics the insertion of science and technology advances in Orthodontics, Prosthetics, Periodontics and Maxillofacial Surgery aimed at contributing to the comprehensive training of future professionals.
She explained that the day also included the socialization of health promotion actions for the prevention of dental diseases, focused on at-risk population groups, including adults over 50 years.
In Holguin, preventive diagnosis strategies for oral cancer, one of the most frequent locations of the disease, are also promoted as part of the extension of services to the communities, prioritizing people with disabilities, pregnant women and children.
Dentistry is one of the health sciences that deals with the treatment and prevention of diseases of the stomatognathic apparatus, which includes teeth, gums and periodontal tissue.
Every October 3rd is celebrated the Day of this specialty in Latin America, in commemoration of the first federation dedicated to the subject, on that date in 1917, and nowadays it is a day to make the world population aware of the importance of this branch.
