Women’s org FMC for greater social role in Holguín

The assemblies taking places prior to the 11th Congress of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) in the province of Holguin are making possible the group discussion on the social role of this organization in correspondence with the dynamics and transformation of the society and the demands and interests of the women who are currently part of it.

In these meetings it has transcended that the FMC has the challenge to activate the functioning of the grassroot structures and to achieve a greater motivation, participation and collaboration of women in the activities summoned by the delegations in the community.

It also needs greater communication, socialization and generalization of good experiences as a guide for action to continue strengthening its work and its adaptation to the complex and changing socioeconomic reality of the country.

The women from Holguin have suggested strengthening community work in terms of social attention to families in vulnerable situations, especially in homes where the elderly, people with disabilities and mothers with three or more children live.

They have also suggested strengthening the fight against any kind of domestic violence and labor discrimination, as well as strengthening the prevention of femicides.

From the very emergence of FMC, more than six decades ago, this organization watches over the rights and equality of women in all the scopes and levels of society, a strength that is not always appreciated in its fair magnitude even when its emancipating management shows indisputable results.

In Holguín it is conquest that the woman is present in all the sectors of the production and the services with greater economic autonomy and power of decisions, and that they perform in managerial positions and in nontraditional trades as a result of her personal and professional growth.

The FMC’s organizational capacity in this eastern Cuban province is based on its large membership, with more than 400,000 members, representing more than 90 percent of the female population over 14 years of age.

With its willingness and capacity to respond, it has been present in all stages of the Revolution and in the search for solutions to problems that affect and denigrate women, such as sexual abuse and prostitution.

Likewise, it implements educational policies and programs that contribute to the improvement and training of the female population and offers help in the face of problems in the home derived from manifestations of violence, physical and psychological abuse, alcoholism, divorce, teenage pregnancy and other conflicts.

Today, in view of the changes and transformations in Cuban society, the FMC continues its struggle in favor of gender equity and continues with the implementation of the National Program for the Advancement of Women (PAM) in force by Presidential Decree 198/2021.
