Night of movies at Gibara International Film Festival

The fourth day of 2023 Gibara International Film Festival could be considered the most cinematographic one, not because of the number of films on the program but because they were the most eagerly awaited by the public.

In this list of this Night of movies, stood out the screening of the feature film El Mundo de Nelsito by Cuban director Fernando Pérez at the Jiba cinema, a work in competition dedicated to cinematographer Raúl Pérez Ureta and whose camera movements and editing are strengths of the film that go beyond the story told, stands out.

Fernando Pérez has pointed out that the film “aspires to be a game. A game of narrative structures and a game of characters. Both (narrative structures and characters) merge (and confuse) in reality and in the imagination of the protagonist, who transforms everything he sees into stories that play with melodrama, absurdity and black humor.

With a luxury cast featuring José Raúl Castro, Isabel Santos, Laura de la Uz, Edith Massola, Jacqueline Arenal, Carlos Luis, Paula Alí, Yerlín Pérez, the film proclaims the loss of confidence in the referent, in the objective event, in the so-called “truth” and imposes the rejection of the logical structure of the discourse.

Also during the Night of movies, the preservation of historical memory through film and gender issues were central themes that were expressed in the open-air screening at the Plaza de la Cultura of the restored classic by Sara Gomez, De cierta manera (1974), considered a premiere at the event, as well as: Iré a Santiago (1964), Guanabacoa: Crónica de mi familia (Cuba, 1966), Una isla para Miguel (1968) and Mi aporte (1969).

Likewise, the Gibara Municipal Museum of History is one of the alternative venues of the event where out-of-competition short films were screened, which have been shown at international festivals, an excellent selection of works within the Festival’s program.
