Cachorros share second place after Sunday’s division of honors

The Cachorros de Holguín split Sunday’s game with the Toros de Camagüey and now make up the triad of teams that share, with 24-9, the second place in the standings of the LXII National Baseball Series.

In the game sealed in the previous day at the end of the third with a 1×0 advantage, the Cachorros won with a wide score of 9×1.

The Camagüeyans negotiated a tie at the end of the fourth inning, but in the sixth, the Cachorros secured the victory by scoring three runs, where they exploited starter Ángel Luis Márquez (1-2), the loser, who gave the mound to Reinier Enríquez, the first of the three relievers in action for the locals.

Felicio García’s team hit the rubber five more times in the seventh chapter in which they hit six hits, including a run, a triple and Edilse Silva’s sixth home run, his 198th of his life.

In the game corresponding to the date, the Toros de Camagüey won with a 1×0 score, to tie 2-2 the sub-series that will be settled this Monday against the Cachorros , starting at 2:00 pm.

The game, in which both teams lost opportunities to score, was decided in the fifth inning before the first reliever and loser Ramiro Rodríguez (2-2).

That inning was opened by lead-off man Danny Luaces (4-3 in the game) with a hit through the short field, reached second on Adriel Hechavarría’s error, went to third on Luis Antonio González’s sacrifice bunt, and scored on Alexander Ayala’s single.

In the sixth it seemed that the Cachorros at least negotiated the tie when Manduley and Gorgüet hit consecutive rockets but a strong connection by Edilse Silva was whimsically lodged in the pitcher’s glove who managed to double the runner from second, then Jorge Luis Peña struck out.

Starter Alejandro León did well for four innings, with three singles, two tickets, a dedbol and a wild pitch, but due to the run-scoring rule the victory went to Fernando Ramos (4-1) who threw the remaining three chapters at a rate of three singles and three strikeouts.

Ramiro Rodriguez (2 H and 4 BB in 2 ERA) also did a good job, as he rescued the starter Jose Miguel Rodriguez (2 H and 4 BB in 2 ERA), as he took a three inning shutout, in which he had three hits, struck out one and conceded three bases, one of them intentional.

Completing the job for Holguín were Luis Cáser, who was hit by two unanswered hits, struck out one and gave up an intentional base in 1 1/3 and left-hander Dayrián Batista, who faced the emerging Damichel Flores with bases loaded in the seventh and forced him to hit into a double play.
Now Matanzas, Holguín and Mayabeque (24-19) escort, half a game behind, Santiago de Cuba, leader of the series with 25-19.

Artemisa and Pinar del Río (23-19 at 1.0), Isla de la Juventud (23-20 at 1.5) and Ciego de Ávila (21-19 at 2.0) complete the so-called qualifying zone.
