Very early in the morning, at noon or in the evening, the voice of Julio César Pupo Martínez can be heard through CMKO Radio Angulo, in programs such as Estamos tan cerca, Fiesta en el campo or Parada Nocturna, all stellar programs that enjoy a large audience.
Julio is orinally from Mayari, where he got to know the fascinating world of radio, thanks to CMKN, where he worked in his first years as a broadcaster, however, most of his professional career has been spent in the city of Holguin, alternating with television and shows.
On the eve of Broadcaster’s Day, which is celebrated in Cuba every December 1st, the versatile presenter tells us his secrets about his work as a broadcaster and how much it means to belong to this profession.
From Valero to Julio: a party in the countryside
“Fiesta en el campo” is the longest-running program in Holguin’s radio: 64 years enlivening, every noon, the lunch or the after-dinner of the peasantry, while, seated on the stool, under the mango tree, the guajiro waits for the moment to return to the furrow.
Although it was originally called “Holguín le canta al Turquino” (Holguín sings to Turquino Pick) and then it was renamed “Fiesta en el campo” (Party in the countryside), Holguin people baptized it definitively as “La carreta de Valero”, a name that lasts until today as the best tribute that can be made to the person who devoted his life to this space: Sergio Antonio González Valero, outstanding broadcaster from Holguín, winner of the 2015 National Radio Award.
Jorge Ramiro Velázquez (Velazquito) has been in charge of the guateque for 43 years, while Flor Vega, his advisor, recalls that it was in the role of head of the Music Editor of CMKO that he began to be linked to “Fiesta en el campo”. Both agree that it has always been loved by the audience, but also by radio producers, young and experienced, for being a school program.
They are joined by Julio César Pupo, the host of this rural festival, as well as the current poets and musicians of Conjunto Cacoyugüín, a hallmark of the program and its home, since its foundation, with Guillermo Sánchez as director, Adolfinita Sánchez, the singer and the poets Felo García and Eugenio Escobar (Escobarito).
