National Sugar Workers’ Day celebrated in Holguin

Sugar workers in the province of Holguin celebrated this October 13 their National Day, because on that date in 1960, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro, in a televised speech, informed the people about the nationalization of 195 sugar mills throughout the country.

The workers of the sector are committed to carry out a better harvest, even in atypical conditions due to the difficult economic situation of the country, so celebrating their National Day means to remain faithful to what Fidel said in May 1996 in the town of Tacajo, in the province of Holguin, when he visited the “Fernando de Dios” sugar mill.

“It is difficult to find another sector that feels so much love for its industry and for its task, than that of the sugar workers…”.

This was made clear in the provincial act developed in the company of service to the sugar activity, which counted with the presence of Francisco Columbié, national director of the entity and Eribel Ávila Creo, general secretary of the sugar union in the province, together with other executives of the sector.

Seven outstanding workers received the Jesús Suárez Gayol Distinction for their extensive trajectory during 25 years of uninterrupted work in the sector.

In the cslosing words of the act Damicela Mayacen Velázquez, secretary of the Municipal Bureau of the Sugar Union in the municipality of Holguín, ratified the commitment to finish the industrial repairs in time and with quality, and to increase sugar cane production, to make a better harvest with higher levels of efficiency, in the cutting, transport and industry fronts.

At the same time, a representation of workers from the different Base Business Units of the province ratified the decision to face the difficulties, with a high sense of belonging, from the starting whistle of the sugar mills until the closing of the 2023-2024 sugar harvest.
