Japanese delegation visits the Caletones desalination plant ahead of startup a decisive step toward transforming access to drinking water in the coastal community of Caletones, in the municipality of Gibara. Took place this Tuesday with the official visit of Ms. Yanagizawa Mizyki, Community Project Coordinator at the Embassy of Japan in Cuba.
Accompanied by top Party and government officials from this locality in Holguin province. As well as executives from the provincial Water Resources agency. The diplomat verified that everything is ready to begin the startup of the vital equipment—donated by the Japanese people—next Tuesday.

The infrastructure addresses a long-standing demand from local residents by integrating two processing units. The first, funded through Japanese cooperation at a cost of approximately 129,850 euros. It provides a processing capacity of 0.75 liters per second.
Also this technology is complemented by a larger-scale unit provided by the Cuban government. Capable of generating 5 liters per second, bringing the plant’s combined capacity to 5.75 liters per second.
Progress on the project promises an immediate impact on the area. With civil works more than 80% complete as of early 2025 and the technical installation of the Japanese module finished. Efforts are now focused on the final electrical connections prior to the start of operations.

This joint effort will ensure a stable supply of drinking water for a population ranging from 400 to 2,500 permanent residents. While also meeting demand during peak season by benefiting the thousands of visitors who stay at the local campsite’s 132 units.
