Thanks to a formidable outing by starting pitcher Carlos Alberto Santiesteban, the Holguin Cubs achieved their first victory of the 65th National Baseball Series against the Granma Alazanes.
During the second game of the series at Calixto García Stadium, the home team silenced the Granma bats, securing an 8–3 victory.
In his first start of the season, Santiesteban pitched seven innings. Allowing only two runs while recording five strikeouts and just one walk, thereby earning the 73rd win of his career.
Lugdis Pineda’s squad punished Granma starter Yoel Mojena right from the first inning. Scoring three runs on hits by Edward Magaña and Carlos Barrabí Jr.—the latter enjoying a perfect day at the plate.
However, the game seemed to tighten in the fourth inning when the Alazanes scored twice. Capitalizing on a hit by Yuliesky Remón and an error by Luis Raúl Domínguez on a hard-hit ball.
Following that moment, the Cubs’ offense pulled away again. Scoring two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, plus another in the seventh.
Right-hander Frank Navarro handled closing duties for the Cubs. Pitching the final two innings and allowing one earned run.
Offensively, standout performers included leadoff hitter Andrys Agüero—who hit his first home run and drove in two runs. Carlos Barrabí Jr. (going 3-for-3 with an RBI), and Magaña (2-for-4 with a pair of extra-base hits).
