University partnership boosts doctoral training in Holguin with Belgian support

This week, the University of Holguin launched a strategic international cooperation partnership to boost high-level research in eastern Cuba.

Through the “CRISSS” project—”Capacity building for research and innovation at the University of Holguin: accelerating national development through smart service solutions engineering”. The institution took a decisive step toward consolidating its Doctoral School during a working meeting between academic administrators and program coordinators.

Moreover the gathering brought together key figures from the institution’s academic leadership. Such as the project’s general coordinator, Dr. Jenny Ruiz de la Peña, and the leader of the Doctoral School sub-project, Dr. Roberto Pérez Rodríguez.

Joining them were Dr. Yurima Otero Góngora, Director of Postgraduate Education. Dr. Onaida Calzadilla González, President of the Scientific Degree Commission. Dr. Rogelio Cuenca Martínez, Head of the Scientific Degrees Group; and Dr. Yoandri Salas Suárez, Secretary of the commission. Together, they outlined the methodological and institutional steps necessary to ensure the program’s implementation.

This initiative will enable 15 Cuban professionals to pursue doctoral training. Under a “sandwich” model, ultimately earning a dual postgraduate degree.

Also the training framework directly links the Holguin university with prestigious Belgian institutions. Including KU Leuven (University of Leuven), the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Free University of Brussels), and Hasselt University.

The program’s impact extends beyond individual training. As it seeks to directly strengthen the country’s scientific and technological fabric through the development of smart service solutions. The initiative has the financial and logistical backing of the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR-UOS). Ensuring the necessary resources for academic and research exchange between Europe and Cuba over the coming years.
