As 2026 draws to a close, public health in the municipality of Antilla—located on Holguin’s northern coast—faces numerous challenges. In an interview with Radio Angulo Digital, Dr. Rodolfo Manuel Puig Rodríguez, the sector’s general director in this coastal town, provides details on the situation.
Let’s begin by looking at the strategies being implemented to maintain a stable hygienic-epidemiological situation in this part of Holguin.
“There is currently no dengue transmission in our territory, and to maintain a stable hygienic-epidemiological situation. We are focusing on strengthening surveillance and community education. This includes prevention and health promotion campaigns, as well as continuous training for our staff. Furthermore, we are collaborating with other institutions to ensure a fast response to any outbreak or health emergency.”
Having a solid program is fundamental. How is the refinement of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program progressing in the municipality?
“The Family Doctor and Nurse Program is essential for bringing health services closer to the population. We are implementing more comprehensive training for our professionals, focusing on primary care and community work. We are also—within the limits of our resources—improving infrastructure and available supplies so they can carry out their work effectively and reach more people. Of the 24 existing clinics, 11 have undergone various construction projects to optimize them.”
Another major challenge is reducing the low birth weight rate. What actions are being taken to address this issue?
“There have been 11 cases of low birth weight so far this year, and to reduce this rate, we are implementing more accessible and effective prenatal care programs.” “This includes rigorous monitoring by the PAMI program of the 101 pregnant women in the area and the promotion of healthy habits during pregnancy. Furthermore, we are working with the Municipal Sports Directorate on physical fitness programs for expectant mothers, as proper preparation is key in this regard.”
Regarding maternal and infant mortality rates, what measures are you implementing to achieve a zero-rate outcome?
“Our commitment in this area is absolute, and we intend to keep the rate at zero. We are implementing strict protocols for prenatal, delivery, and postpartum care. Ensuring that all women have access to skilled care. Additionally, we conduct periodic assessments to identify potential cases and act quickly.”
Finally, how do you plan to reduce costs through the implementation and fulfillment of the efficiency program?
“Efficiency is key to our management. We are reviewing our internal processes to optimize resources. We also promote the rational use of supplies and better planning for our campaigns and programs. Continuous staff training also contributes to improved efficiency in resource use. Currently, this training is directed at 109 laboratory technicians and 27 newly graduated health professionals.”
