International Book Fair Arrives in Holguin

The 34th edition of the International Book Fair arrives in Holguin with a program that rejects mere novelty. Opting instead for conceptual depth, community engagement, and a distinctly transcontinental focus. The corners of Calixto García Park are preparing to transform. Between September 4th and 6th, into the precise location where local publishing and universal creative work converge.

Dedicated this year to the narrative legacy of writer Rubén Rodríguez, the Holguin event transcends the traditional exhibition space. Creating a network of 28 interconnected cultural venues. The epicenter of the event will be the Gran Librería bookstore in Plaza de la Marqueta. While its reach extends to the Expo-Holguin fairgrounds and the industrial and community hub of the mining town of Moa.

Literature with a distinctive style and continental reach

The province’s publishing industry will showcase its ability to draw a crowd through its leading publishers. Ediciones La Luz, Ediciones Holguin, and La Mezquita will be present with a refreshed catalog. That balances established regional authors with the emerging voices of young writers. Continuing the initiatives that were first tested in Havana this past summer.

Among the highlights of the theoretical and literary program is the Memorial de Testigo (Witness Memorial) event. Sponsored by the provincial branch of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC). The platform will bring together essential writers from the island’s literary scene. Including the novelist Emerio Medina, winner of the 2010 Casa de las Américas Prize.

Also, in the context of the commemorations for the centennial of the birth of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution. The first volume of “Selected Works of Fidel Castro” will be presented. Published by Editorial Alejandro, this volume offers a documentary reinterpretation of his thought.

A Dialogue of Cultures on Holguin’s Cobblestones

This year, the Book Fair’s international dimension will be anchored primarily in Russian culture, declared the guest of honor. This transoceanic bridge will be officially inaugurated during the artistic gala “Remembrances.” Conceived as a symbolic weaving together of Slavic tradition and Caribbean sensibility.

The historical intersection between the two nations will also be explored through rigorous research at the La Periquera Provincial Museum. The iconic building will house the Science Pavilion. Also where a valuable documentary exhibition will be on display. Reconstructing the presence, integration, and legacy of the Russian-speaking community in eastern Cuba.

For three days, Holguin will transform its public space into an open-air printing press: an ecosystem where reading ceases to be a solitary act and becomes a collective celebration. A bridge between continents, and a vibrant expression of island creativity.
