San German Welcomes Geovani Claro Bisset, Their Handball Champion at Santo Domingo 2026

With a caravan that traveled through the town’s main streets, the residents of San German welcomed Geovani Claro Bisset. The only athlete from the Holguin municipality of Urbano Noris who participated in the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games. And who returned home with a gold medal.

This talented young man, just 19 years old and with a height that commands respect on the court. He stands out not only for his stature, but also for his athletic abilities. That led him, at such a young age, to be part of the Cuban handball team that won the gold medal at this major regional event.

Upon his arrival, the sports movement organized a parade through the main streets of San German. So that the townspeople could have the opportunity to greet him as he proudly displayed his gold medal. The caravan culminated in front of his home. Where neighbors, friends, and family gathered to pay tribute to the young man who is already a local legend.

For Geovani, Santo Domingo was his baptism of fire with the senior team. Although he had already shone in the qualifying tournament, where he was the most outstanding athlete of the Cuban squad. His place on the final roster was not guaranteed; however, the team’s management took a chance on him. And this young man did not disappoint Team Cuba.

His mother, Yenis Viset Álvarez, a member of the National Assembly of People’s Power and current Director of Sports in the municipality. She visibly moved, delivered a heartfelt message in which she thanked the fans of San German for their unconditional support. And highlighted her son’s achievement as a result of the effort and athletic training he began on the courts of his hometown.

The young man promised him before leaving that he was going to win the medal. And that this medal would be dedicated to his town: a kept promise.
