Holguin Athletes Shine in Santo Domingo with 16 Medals for Cuba

The athletes representing the province of Holguin concluded their participation in the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo with a total of 16 medals.

The haul for this year’s Games consisted of three gold, seven silver, and six bronze medals. Distributed among nine disciplines and eleven athletes.

Rower Ana Laura Jiménez was the province’s top medalist, winning a gold medal in the mixed eight-sculls event. Silver medals in the women’s four and coxless four; and a bronze medal in the double sculls.

Judoka Marlon Herrera won the gold medal in the 73-kilogram category. Also took third place in the mixed team competition, demonstrating his skill with six victories, four by ippon.

The other title went to handball player Geovanys Claro. Also who was part of the men’s team that defeated Puerto Rico 34-29 in the final.

Five other athletes from Holguin earned second place on the podium. These included taekwondo athletes Marlyn Pérez (-53 kg). Tamara Robles (-57 kg), and Elianet Crespo (+73 kg). As well as triple jumper Andy Hechavarría and the young sailor Erika Leonor Ibáñez.

Special mention goes to Erika, who, at just 16 years old, demonstrated remarkable athletic maturity. By combining her youth with the experience of Nélido Manso in the two-person Regional Dinghy class.

The remaining bronze medals were won by Andrea Fuentes (rhythmic gymnastics) in the five-ball and three-hoop and two-club combined events. Fencers Iván Cuza and Yordan Danilo Ferrer in the team event. And Eddy Antonio Vázquez (shooting) in the 10-meter air rifle team event.

With these 16 medals, Holguin improves upon its performance in the San Salvador edition. Moreover where it won 13 medals, and reaffirms its status as a breeding ground for Cuban sports talent.
