The Chinese government responded Thursday to recent statements by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding Cuba. Asserting that Washington must end the blockade and sanctions against the archipelago “immediately and completely.” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning accused the U.S. of using “pretexts” and “slander” to justify its policy toward Havana.
“Inventing pretexts and spreading slander cannot justify the brutal blockade and illegal U.S. sanctions against Cuba,” Mao stated. She added that the measures imposed for decades by Washington have severely impacted the Cuban economy and the living conditions of the population.
Firm Support for Cuba
The spokesperson also maintained that US sanctions have caused “immense suffering to the Cuban people.” Also she recalled that the blockade policy has been repeatedly questioned by the international community in various multilateral forums.
“China firmly supports Cuba in defending its sovereignty and national security. In opposing foreign interference,” Mao Ning declared. In that regard, she urged Washington to listen to “the voice of the international community.” And abandon its pressure tactics against the island nation.
This new Chinese response reflects the political support that Beijing maintains for Cuba amidst the tensions between Washington and Havana. In recent years, China has repeatedly questioned the US financial, commercial, and economic blockade. And has voted alongside the majority of UN member states in favor of resolutions calling for its lifting.
