Holguin Hosts Cuban Qualifying Tournament for World Domino Championship

The qualifying tournament, which awarded four spots to represent Cuba in the World Domino Championship. Took place on April 25th and 26th at the Provincial Sports Museum in Holguin.

Engineer Senén Ramírez Carmenate, coordinator of the Domino Management and Development Group. He explained that the qualifying format used was individual, with random pairings based on the standings.

The competition featured players from Santiago de Cuba, Granma, Guantanamo, and the host city. The tournament was played up to the fourth round in the group stage. Also where players were seeded according to their ranking. From the fifth round onward, the Swiss system was used, with a total of 40 games played.

After tallying the results, the four qualifying spots for the world championship in the Dominican Republic went to Alexis Cuervo (25-13). And José Orlando San Nicolás (24-15), both from Holguin. Didier Figueredo (25-13) from Granma; and Maikel Tabio (24-16) from Guantanamo.

These athletes will join other Cubans to form a delegation that will seek to bring back to our country the glory days it experienced in this sport during the early 21st century. The world championship will be held from October 5th to 12th in the Dominican Republic.

Finally, Ramírez Carmenate praised the Holguin venue for overcoming the difficulties encountered during the event. And thanked the provincial baseball commissioner, Irochi Bartutis, who presented the champion with a Cubs cap.
