His bolero “Nosotros” (“We”) has been performed by more than 400 artists worldwide. Including the beautiful Spanish singer Sara Montiel.

He wrote this song shortly before his death, while suffering from tuberculosis. Condemned to never be able to make the woman of his dreams happy. He dedicated this farewell to her, which would become a timeless love anthem. This story has given rise to the myth surrounding the song.

“We” has become a legend. A story steeped in drama filled with love, passion, illness, and death.

This song is in the repertoire of every great singer, trio, and group that performs live. Although “Nosotros” (“We”) was written in Cuba more than 70 years ago, it has never lost its relevance.

Over time, it has been recorded by some of the most successful Spanish-language artists. From Fernando Fernández to Luis Miguel, and from Los Panchos to Plácido Domingo.

Also the story begins in Havana, where the young composer Pedro Junco, born into a wealthy family. Led a dissolute life in his youth and contracted tuberculosis, a deadly disease at the time.

Junco had many romances, but he hadn’t known true love until a captivatingly beautiful young woman entered his life.

She belonged to a family that was scandalized to learn that her young suitor was a bohemian composer. With a reputation as a seductive adventurer. The girl’s father forbade her from ever seeing him again.

But love, which always finds a way for hearts, led them to secret rendezvous where they experienced an intense romance. But tragedy struck: his tuberculosis had worsened, and everything indicated that Pedro would die.

It was essential to isolate him completely so that he wouldn’t infect those who came near him. He was confined to a hospital far from Havana and couldn’t tell his beloved that he would never see her again. For insisting on it would cause her death. He traveled to the hospital and climbed into the bed from which he would never rise alive.

In a fit of grief, Pedro wrote a letter to pour out his farewell words. But how would he get the letter to his beloved? No one knew about their relationship, and his father scrutinized every letter that arrived. So he decided to turn the letter into a song and asked a troubadour friend to sing it on the radio. On a program his beloved listened to every night.

She, deeply distressed by her beloved’s absence, finally learned of the terrifying situation. She immediately went to the hospital to see him, but it was too late: Pedrito Junco had died hours earlier.

The public learned of the tragic story, and soon “Nosotros” (“We”) became popular throughout Latin America through various recordings. Today, this song is among the best-known romantic ballads in the Spanish-speaking world.

Moreover the song “Nosotros” (“We”) ensured that Junco’s impossible love never died, because it can be found on many radio stations. In the repertoires of great singers, making him immortal through art.

WE

We, who love each other so much

Must part ways

Don’t ask me anymore

It’s not for lack of love

I love you with all my soul

I swear I adore you

And in the name of this love

And for your own good

I say goodbye.
