The Holguin Cubs defeated the Santiago de Cuba Wasps for the third consecutive day at Major General Calixto García Stadium. This time with a close score of 7-4, extending their lead to two games at the top of the 64th National Baseball Series.
In the only game played this Friday, the Holguin team scored their seven runs with eight hits. Including Michael Gorgüet’s tenth home run, while also taking advantage of nine walks and three hit-by-pitches.
Each team scored two runs in the first inning. A tie that remained until the third inning when Yeison Martínez (5-3) homered off left-handed starter Andriuw Valido.
In the fifth inning, Valido (4.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER) allowed an infield hit, struck out, and handed the mound to Jesús Quintán. Who induced Harold Vázquez (5-2, HR, 2 RBI) to hit into a double play and then got cleanup hitter Carlos Monier to fly out to left field for a walk.
While the Holguin team chased the losing starter, Yosiel Serrano (3-3), and took the lead in the fifth inning. Quintán (3-0), the winning pitcher, continued his dominance over the Santiago team, completing four innings and allowing only two hits and one earned run.
In the ninth, Frank Romero came in to pitch and, after recording two outs. Allowed three consecutive hits and one run.
For the Cubs, who played errorless for the third consecutive day, in addition to Gorgüet (4-for-3, 4 RBIs), Adriel Hechavarría (3-for-2) and Christian Onofre and Jorlis Bravo, both 1-for-4 with an RBI, stood out offensively.
The top of the standings now looks like this: Holguin (34-18); Las Tunas (30-18, 2.0 ERA, .625 AVG); Industriales (31-19, 2.0 ERA, .620 AVG). Matanzas (32-21, 2.5 ERA); Cienfuegos (29-20, 3.5 ERA); Artemisa (29-21, 4.0 ERA); Mayabeque (28-22, 5.0 ERA); and Sancti Spiritus (28-25, 6.5 ERA).
This Saturday, starting at 1:30 pm, the fourth games of the eleven-game series will be played, and Carlos Santiesteban (5-2, 3.88 ERA) will take the mound for Holguin.
