In 1975, the African stage was marked by an event that not only transformed Angola’s destiny but also consolidated Cuba’s internationalist solidarity on the continent. The victory of Cuban and Angolan forces in Quinfangondo was a turning point that allowed for the proclamation of the People’s Republic of Angola on November 11th of that same year.
This triumph, between November 9th and 11th, represented a decisive advance in the fight against colonialism. Halting the advance of the UNITA movement forces, supported by South Africa and the United States.
Cuba’s participation thus became a bulwark for the defense of Angolan sovereignty. In this context, Cuban forces achieved a decisive victory not only in Quinfangondo but also in Cabinda. Where the soldiers of the largest of the Antilles demonstrated exceptional courage and determination.
Particularly noteworthy was the participation of the soldiers from Holguin, who formed an integral part of this internationalist mission.
These young men, from various towns in the province of Holguin, joined their compatriots and Angolan combatants in a struggle that transcended borders. Their dedication was fundamental to ensuring success in the battles fought in Cabinda and other strategic regions.
Moreover the victory at Quinfangondo not only opened the door to Angolan independence but also symbolized a triumph over the colonial forces that had oppressed Africa for centuries.
Also the proclamation of the People’s Republic of Angola represented a significant step toward self-determination and the development of the African continent.
Five decades after these events, it is crucial to remember and recognize the role played by Cuban soldiers. Especially those from this northeastern region.
Their courage and sacrifice are a testament to the spirit of solidarity that characterizes Cuba and remind us that the struggle for freedom and social justice is a cause that unites the peoples of the world, regardless of geographical distance.
