Sixty years after its founding by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Teaching Hospital retains the vitality of its early years.
It was on November 7th, 1965, that this institution began providing services. It was the first healthcare facility built by the revolutionary government in eastern Cuba. It was hailed as a product of solidarity, fraternity, and internationalism due to the collaboration of the former Soviet Union.
Since then, its professionals and administrators have made significant contributions to medicine, not only in Cuba but also in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through surgical interventions, non-invasive procedures, and several million consultations annually for patients from the eastern provinces.
Sara Liz Ricardo Suárez, the institution’s deputy director, highlighted to the Cuban News Agency (CNA) that the hospital was a pioneer in corneal transplantation, open abdominal surgery, and the separation of the first conjoined twins. An intervention carried out in 1973 that marked a milestone in the history of medicine in Cuba, spearheaded by this institution.
Also she noted that the center’s greatest asset is its human capital. Which has lovingly overcome shortages of supplies to dedicate its talent to the health of the people.
Currently, medical and non-medical equipment, lighting, and water and sanitation systems are being restored as part of the anniversary celebrations of what is known as the colossus of Holguin medicine, she indicated.
Over 60 years, the desire to continue doing and learning in the areas of cardiology, neonatology, and obstetrics has grown. As well as the desire to improve the work at the maternity ward, where the most babies are born in Cuba, she specified.
Although Hurricane Melissa delayed the celebrations, the Lenin Hospital maintains its daily vitality with a dedicated staff that overcomes every obstacle to provide quality care. As an architectural symbol of life in the modern part of the city. The Lenin Hospital retains the energy of its early years and stands as an example of the Cuban Revolution’s achievements in public health.
