Holguin’s Taymara Oropesa advances to semifinals at Badminton

Holguin’s Taymara Oropesa advanced to the semifinals this Friday after earning her third consecutive victory. In the singles event at the 2025 Santo Domingo Badminton Open, which runs through Sunday.

She won the quarterfinals against host Nairobi Abigaíl Jiménez in three sets (21-8, 16-21, 21-13). Securing a bronze medal that could change if she maintains her unbeaten streak on Saturday.

In fact, it was Taymara’s fourth victory against Nairobi, having dominated her twice in 2017, at the Giraldilla in Havana and the Guatemala International. And once in 2018, at the Peru Open.

Oropesa began her career in the Dominican capital with a victory over local player Emely Benítez (21-7, 21-10), in her first career matchup.

In the round of 16, she defeated Argentina’s Iona Gualdi (21-12, 21-15). Whom she also beat 2-0 during the 2019 Lima Pan American Games.

Other notable performances by the Cubans came in the mixed doubles evento. As Taymara and Roberto Carlos Herrera, and Juan Carlos Bencomo and Leyanis Contreras. They qualified for the quarterfinals, where they will face opponents from the Dominican Republic and Canada, respectively.

The competition counts toward the world ranking and also brings together competitors from the United States, Germany, Switzerland, Brazil, India, and Puerto Rico.
