The Holguin team defeated Granma 47-25 on Friday in the closing match of the Eastern Zone of the IX National Boxing Series. Held at the Fernando de Dios Athenaeum in the City of Parks.
Juan Milán Ponce, secretary of the National Boxing Commission, reported that they won their bouts and remained unbeaten by Holguin natives Kevin Sayas (50 kilograms), Jorge Munive (70 kg), and Jorge Soto (80 kg).
Other victories included Néstor Rodríguez (55 kg), Samuel Campos (60 kg), Yenier Watson (65 kg), and Carlos Pérez (85 kg).
Santiago de Cuba defeated Las Tunas 52-22. But it wasn’t enough to secure one of the two qualifying spots.
The standings left Guantanamo in first place with 202 points, followed by Holguin (185) as the top seed, then Santiago (155), Granma (114), and in last place Las Tunas (106).
Holguin’s most notable performers were Soto and Munive. Both with four wins in as many matches; Sayas (3-0), Wuatson, de la Torre, and Pérez, all 3-1. And Néstor Rodríguez and Elio Neyra, each with 2-1 records.
The final stage of the IX National Boxing Series, from December 10-16th, will take place in Holguin. In addition to the hosts from Guantanamo, four other qualifiers will participate, from the Western and Central Zones.
