The consolidation of schools and the repurposing of underutilized ones are part of the measures established by the education sector in Holguin. Aimed at reorganizing the school network, which includes more than 1,330 institutions for the 2025-2026 academic year.
During the upcoming school year, seven municipalities implemented modifications aimed at improving the quality of the teaching process by optimizing human, material, financial, and infrastructure resources. In addition to promoting student attendance by placing them in schools close to their homes, Luis Felipe Batista Rodríguez, Director General of Education in the province, explained to CNA.
Among the territories that reorganized their network are Gibara, Antilla, Banes, Rafael Freyre, and the provincial capital. Taking into account the decline in enrollment, the level of teacher coverage, and the state of the facilities.
Rural schools remain unchanged due to their importance to isolated communities. While reorientation and reunification measures for approximately 20,000 students were concentrated in district capitals as a method of zoning enrollment.
The director noted that some changes include the opening of pre-university classrooms in the towns of Melilla and Aguada la Piedra, in the municipality of Rafael Freyre. The creation of a mixed elementary and pre-university center in Alcala, in Baguanos. The integration of that level of education into the Manuel Isla Technical Institute in Cacocum.

By creating larger groups, allowing for efficient teaching management, the allocation of qualified teachers and quality classes will be improved. Which will benefit staff sustainability and reduce teacher shortages, he stated.
In addition, annexes were closed with the transfer of their students, schools were converted into other useful facilities within the area. Such as pioneer palaces and camps, and the Dagoberto Sanfield Junior High School was closed because it no longer meets the conditions for efficient repair, he added.
Nationally, the province of Holguin has the largest number of General Education institutions, including 65 daycare centers, 29 polytechnics, 27 pre-university schools, among others, which will welcome more than 131,000 students on September 1st.
