Second Provincial Cardiology Conference to be held in Holguin

The Second Provincial Cardiology Conference, which was held in Holguin in 2023, will be held from September 10th to 29th.

This date was chosen in honor of Cuban Cardiology Day, every September 11th. The 88th anniversary of the founding of the Cuban Society of Cardiology (SCC); and World Heart Day, September 29th.

According to Dr. Reyber Jesús Domínguez Pérez, cardiologist and President of the Holguin Chapter of the society. “This chapter includes cardiologists, cardiology residents, cardiovascular surgeons, nurses, and technicians associated with the specialty. As well as specialists from other specialties who maintain a connection with ours.”

This event will be co-sponsored by the respective Chapters of the Cuban Societies of Internal Medicine and Family Medicine, the Provincial Coordinating Group for Non-Communicable Diseases. The Provincial Council of Scientific Societies, and the University of Medical Sciences of Holguin (UCMHo).

On this occasion, the activities accompanying the scientific conference will be “From the specialist to the student, from the hospital to the community; for a healthy heart, a single will.”

Therefore, the main objectives have been set to promote cardiovascular health in the community. Update knowledge on vital topics in Cardiology, offer tools that facilitate the interpretation of specific complementary tests (Doppler echocardiography), and the management of pregnant women with heart disease.

The main topics to be covered in the keynote lectures and preparatory courses are based on the above objectives: Acute coronary syndrome, cardiovascular interventions, prevention of premature aging, ischemic cerebrovascular disease, Doppler echocardiography. The HEARTS Initiative for the Americas, pregnant women with heart disease, cardiovascular health promotion, and cardiology skills needed by medical students.

During the opening session, held at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin General University Hospital Theater on September 10th, Drs. Reyber Jesús Domínguez Pérez, Wilber Jesús Riverón Carralero, Rolando Carlos Batista Lora, and Juan Carlos Báster Moro will address topics of interest such as cardiovascular interventions; recent advances; prevention of premature aging; an update on ischemic cerebrovascular disease; practical implications of the 2025 Guidelines for the management of acute coronary syndrome; and the HEARTS Initiative for the Americas. Results and projections, respectively.

As part of this Second Scientific Conference, the “Perseverance in Cardiology Award” will be presented to 30 professionals linked to the specialty for outstanding work within this provincial chapter.

Regarding the history of Cardiology in Holguin, the first cardiologist was Dr. Edel Lachataignerais Popa, who began providing services in 1978. However, prior to that date, specialists from other provinces and Dr. Eduardo De Valle Morejón, who served as a cardiologist at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin General University Hospital since its founding, provided services.

Currently, the province of Holguin, outside of Havana, Santa Clara, and Santiago de Cuba, where there are Cardiocenters, is the only one where elective cardiac surgeries have been performed. A practice promoted by Doctor of Science Delfín Rodríguez Mulet.

The Holguin Chapter of the Cuban Society of Cardiology was founded on March 1st, 2012. Currently has more than 80 members, one of the largest in the country in terms of the number of active and regular members. Since its inception, the chapter has recognized professionals in this specialty who excel in their work.

A clear example of this is how, at the Second Symposium on an Updated Multidisciplinary Approach to High Blood Pressure, 10 outstanding professionals were recognized for the first time with the Master of Cardiology distinction in Holguin for their dedication. Significant merits in care, teaching, research, and dedication to the specialty.
