Summer: Hot Weather and Health Challenges

Summer is a time of year characterized by high temperatures and public health challenges. For this reason, it is vital that society adopt appropriate hygiene measures to prevent common illnesses during this time of year.

During the months of July and August, environmental conditions favor the proliferation of bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Which increase the risk of gastrointestinal infections, vector-borne diseases, and skin problems.

Among the most common illnesses during the summer are gastroenteritis, skin infections, and food poisoning.

Gastroenteritis, often caused by the consumption of contaminated water or food, becomes more common during this period due to the heat, which favors the multiplication of harmful microorganisms.

Heat stroke, dehydration, and vector-borne diseases, such as dengue, also tend to increase during the summer months. Other common problems during this time of year include fungal skin infections, which are exacerbated by humidity and heat, as well as heatstroke and sunburn.

Food poisoning is another significant risk during the summer season due to food spoilage caused by high temperatures and, currently, due to the constant power outages in Cuba.

Health authorities advise that to prevent the most common summer illnesses, it is advisable to stay hydrated, protect yourself from the sun, take measures to prevent insect bites, consume fresh and safe foods, and maintain good personal and communal hygiene.

It is important to emphasize that, in addition to personal and food hygiene measures, education and awareness about the impact of climate change on public health should guide the population on how to adapt to the new climatic realities.

With the correct implementation of preventive guidelines. It is possible to enjoy this season safely.
