The province of Artemisa dominated the judo competition at the National School Games. An event held until Sunday at the Fernando de Dios Sports Center in Holguin City.
The Artemisa team totaled 57.13 points, relegating Santiago de Cuba (47.57) and Havana (44.43) to second and third place, in that order. Holguin’s representatives, with 25 points, placed eighth.
Among the Holguin team, Maikol Columbiet, the 55-kilogram representative, stood out, winning the gold medal in his division and being selected as the most comprehensive athlete of the competition.
Other medalists included Vanier Dupón, who took second place in the over 90 kg category, and bronze medals were taken by Yandy Grave de Peralta (90 kg), Camila Lorenzo (57 kg), and José Miguel Ávila (60 kg).
In the competition for people with disabilities, the Havana judokas dominated, followed by the Sancti Spiritus judokas in second place, and the Santiago judokas in third. Holguin-born Lianis Ullea (+64 kg) from the Cuban National Association of the Blind won the gold medal.
In addition to Columbiet, the honor roll included María Carla Revé Casamayor (Guantanamo) among the women, and Jesús Ferrás García (Holguin), the outstanding referee.
The National School Sports Games, unique in their kind and a fundamental pillar for more than six decades, represent the essential platform where, since 1963, future national high-performance champions have been forged.
The 61st edition marked a milestone in its expansion, with a program of 36 competitive sports disciplines in more than 13 provinces across the country.
