New solar park in Holguin contributes energy to the NES

A new solar park in Holguin, Providencia, located near the Frank País García International Airport, is now contributing 21.8 MW to the National Electric System (SEN by its initials in Spanish) after completing its construction ahead of schedule, according to a Ahora publication.

The project, developed with Chinese technology and executed by Military Construction Unit No. 2, is part of the national strategy to diversify the energy matrix and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Dionis Pérez Figueredo, director of the Electric Company’s operations center in the province and the person primarily responsible for the project, informed this media outlet that the facility features 42,588 solar panels mounted on driven piles, as well as seven 3 MW inverters, capable of increasing the voltage to deliver quality energy to the national grid.

The information adds that more than ten Cuban companies participated in the construction process, undertaking civil, electrical, and technological work in a coordinated manner.

Pérez Figueredo also explained that “The total investment reached 800 million pesos, and under the supervision of national and international specialists, high safety standards and quality certification were guaranteed throughout the project.”

The facility, spread over an area 720 meters long by 380 meters wide, not only strengthens clean energy production but also leaves a significant social impact by providing new employment and development opportunities to the area.

Furthermore, this project, according to a publication by Radio Habana Cuba, represents a leap in the country’s energy diversification with measurable benefits. It will save 9,160 tons of fuel annually (equivalent to 29,911 liters of diesel per day). It will prevent the emission of 3,800 tons of CO₂ each year. It will help reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

With this new solar park and the Corúa 5 solar park, which has contributed 21.8 MW to the SEN since the end of March, the province consolidates its leadership in clean energy, along with the Gibara 1 and 2 wind farm, a pioneer of its kind in the country.

Cuba is moving toward its goal of 92 solar parks by 2028, with 55 under development this year.
