President Miguel Díaz-Canel urged the BRICS group this Sunday in Rio de Janeiro to build a more just and inclusive international order. Aimed at achieving sustainable development.
The president made this statement while speaking at the debate on “Strengthening multilateralism, economic and financial affairs, and artificial intelligence.” A session of the 17th BRICS Summit, open to member countries, partners, and guests.
In that space, the president called for not abandoning the ideals of peace, dialogue, mutual respect, cooperation, and solidarity amid the complex global situation.
BRICS is today synonymous with hope, the head of state affirmed, reflecting that the group represents an opportunity for multilateralism to escape the chaos and ineffectiveness “into which the arrogance of a few” has plunged the United Nations Charter.
“The octogenarian organization (UN) is dangerously fragmented and seriously threatened by a progressive erosion of multilateralism, which translates into elevated risks for international peace and security,” he warned.
The Cuban president denounced the United States government for abusing its military, economic, and financial power. While showing absolute disregard for the principles and norms of international law and the UN Charter.
“It is the same power that supported the recent aggressions by the Israeli government against Iran and carried out a direct attack on the Persian nation, with the bombings of three nuclear facilities,” he noted.
In this regard, the president reiterated his solidarity with the people and government of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the face of Israel’s aggression and expressed the strongest condemnation of the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people. Also perpetrated by Israeli forces, in complicity with the United States.
A comprehensive, just, and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an essential premise for bringing peace to the Middle East region at this delicate moment in international relations, he emphasized.
Faced with this international scenario, President Díaz-Canel urged reform of the international financial architecture and its institutions, which he described as opaque and undemocratic.
Also essential, he said, is a more inclusive and democratic governance of artificial intelligence. Ensuring all countries access to its benefits and preventing its use contrary to peace and international law.
