Cuba in voluntary blood donation days

Voluntary blood donation days continue today in Cuba in banks and blood collection centers, prior to the World Blood Donation Day, which is celebrated every June 14th.

Led by the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (Minsap) and communities throughout the country. The initiative, which began last Saturday, encourages this demonstration of empathy with society and human solidarity.

A donor must meet certain parameters that guarantee his or her safety and that of the recipient, including being between 18 and 60 years of age. As well as being over 50 kilograms and 1.5 meters tall, respectively, according to the Minsap website.

As a requirement to be fulfilled, the donor must not have left the country recently nor present piercings or tattoos recently performed, it adds.

Health authorities emphasize that the safety of the voluntary blood donor is a point of care in the health system. Hence primary care performs check-ups to ensure that the donor is in optimal conditions on the day of the donation.

Cuba has a National Blood Program that has among its functions to recruit people suitable for this vital service. To whom several studies are carried out to verify that they do not have communicable diseases.

Another of its major missions is to guarantee the delivery of red blood cells and plasma to BioCubaFarma, leader in Cuba in the development of products and medicines, from their conception to their application in the patient.

Established by the World Health Assembly in 2005, World Blood Donor Day thanks voluntary and unpaid donors for their contribution to saving lives and raises awareness of the ongoing need to donate blood regularly to ensure the quality, safety and availability of blood and blood products for those in need.

In 2025, the theme of the day will be Donate blood, donate hope: together we save lives.
