Cuba celebrates Mother‘s Day this Sunday, a date that traditionally brings the family together in a special, official celebration since 1928. This time, the calendar marked May 11th to express gratitude and love to those we call mothers.
Who, from motherhood, accompany us with patience and tenderness throughout our lives, with an almost divine ability to foresee dangers and anticipate caresses when pain or failure loom.
Every second Sunday in May, Cubans, no matter how difficult the circumstances, do not abandon the custom of gathering as a family to honor mothers and express gratitude for their unconditional dedication to caring for their children and managing and maintaining the well-being of their home.
We, Holguin residents celebrate this significant date today amidst disparate economic limitations and inconvenient power outages, but it is a special day to gratify their care and companionship at all times with a protective intuition that always guides with skill and tireless spirit, in the most diverse situations, despite any sacrifice.
With the current inflation, the celebrations for this anniversary are a true challenge. However, despite the fact that money is tight and everything is scarce, love will not be lacking, as there are plenty of reasons to recognize the selflessness and dedication of our mothers in such difficult times.
The complex socioeconomic situation we face calls for a modest and simple celebration. Even without the traditional cake in many homes, but we still try to keep alive a tradition that unites and strengthens the family.
Today will be a different and unequal day in many ways because our society has changed, and we are no longer what we once were.Every mother has a story to tell. This Sunday, many of us are far from home because we have emigrated or are on a mission.
Some of us have seen our children leave for a foreign country, burdened with dreams and the anguish of separation. Others hold their babies in their arms for the first time and celebrate the joy of motherhood. We will embrace long-lived grandmothers who don’t even remember their names, but we will have the opportunity to repay them for the love, education, and care they provided throughout our lives.
But today, mothers with three or more children are also grateful to have been helped by social programs; and others, still in vulnerable conditions, have not lost hope for shelter and protection through social assistance. Single mothers wake up empowered, narrowing the gender gap with the responsibility of guiding their children and seeing them grow up healthy and happy.
Those suffering from an illness regain strength as a divine gift, and there will be no shortage of flowers for those who have departed for eternity. With the arrival of children, the way we think and act changes, with a new emotional and affective perspective.
Mothers aren’t perfect; we live with all kinds of setbacks, but we are all characterized by that constant concern for raising our children, correcting mistakes, and ensuring they are safe and can achieve their aspirations.
