The filmic representation of women, the differences between the male and female gaze. Their projection on a critical audience were the focus of the debates. On the first day of theoretical panels of the Gibara International Poor Film Festival (FICGibara in the Spanish acronym).

The meeting “Rewriting Stories: Gender and Cinema Today”. Moderated by journalist Rafael Grillo, was attended by Swiss filmmaker Laura Cazador. The singer-songwriter Rochy Ameneiro, renowned puppeteer and artistic director Rubén Darío Salazar, the Cultural, Economic and Political Affairs attaché of the Swiss Embassy in Cuba. Febe Tognina, and screenwriter Patricia Ramos.

Laura Cazador introduced key concepts such as the “male gaze” and the “female gaze”. Highlighting the responsibility of creators to restore the spectator’s vision of the actors, not as objects, but as subjects.

It is not enough to have a female character to represent her gaze. The woman must be approached, identified, completed and related, said the director. For her part, Patricia Ramos pointed out the notable differences in the Cuban film industry. Where the number of films produced or directed by women is much lower compared to those made by men. Pointing to a notable gender bias that increasingly affects Cuban female creators.
