Around 120 participants from all Cuban provinces, and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud, took part in the First National Symposium on Rural Community Nursing, which began on October 17 in Holguín.
A team of professionals from the Ministry of Public Health participated in the event, including Anahy Velázquez Aznar, head of the Nursing Department, who said that this is the first time they have carried out an activity dedicated to the practice of this profession in the hard-to-reach areas of the country.
“These are communities where we have full coverage of human resources, with the priority of placing competent personnel, because due to the geographical characteristics of those areas it is necessary to have highly decisive professionals, capable of solving and transforming the health problems of these communities,” she added.
In these rural spaces, the challenges today are to further enhance the role of nursing in the transformation and approach of the problems present in the communities, to increase the development of human resources in participation in master’s degrees and PhD programs, a difficult issue where they work, and to achieve greater training of specialists in Comprehensive Community Nursing, suggested Velázquez Aznar.
The scientific session dealt with topics such as nursing care in the Maternal and Child Care Program in rural communities, the management of chronic non-communicable diseases and the development and evolution of rural nursing in Cuba, as well as its challenges and challenges to perfect this work.
The Symposium shows the work of nursing in rural areas in tune with the demands of the Health system to contribute to the development of the country, with the use of scientific tools and technological innovation.
The province of Holguín was chosen as the venue for this event due to the results it exhibits in the Family Doctor and Nurse Program and its development in rural areas, in addition to being one of the territories in the country with the greatest representation of these areas.
This region is a reference in rural community nursing care at the national level. It has more than 500 Family Doctor and Nurse Offices in rural areas, of which 270 are in hard-to-reach areas and 66 belong to the mountain communities linked to the state program called Plan Turquino.
Rural community nursing is key in health services, with an active impact on the transformation of its environment. Hence, this Symposium pays tribute to the activities in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program.
