Original de Manzanillo orchestra opens Gibara Film Festival

The 18th edition of the Gibara International Film Festival (FIC Gibara), which will run until August 10 in this coastal city of Holguin province, was officially inaugurated with the characteristic rhythms of Cuban popular music and the rhythm of the Original de Manzanillo orchestra.

The orchestra, led by Wilfredo Salvador Naranjo Verdecia, better known as Pachy Naranjo, who earned the 2011 National Music Award, and who recently received the status of Illustrious Son of Mayari, delighted the public of La Villa Blanca, guests and artists of the film event with its characteristic repertoire.

Songs such as “Mi sombrero de Yarey”, “¿Dónde está Pillín?” and “Son de la loma” were performed by the band known as Cuba’s Supercharanga, which in its 60 years of artistic career has managed to captivate followers of popular dance music both nationally and internationally.

Founded on December 21, 1963, the Original de Manzanillo orchestra is the first to represent its territory in countries such as Mexico, Germany, Canada and Colombia and one of the pioneers in the use of the organette and the electric guitar in Cuba, for which it has won numerous awards and distinctions.

For more than two decades, the International Film Festival has brought to Gibara, among participants and guests, important groups and world-famous musicians such as Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés and Fito Páez.
