Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are annually among the first causes of mortality at global, national and local levels. This behavior motivated in Holguin the celebration, from July 1 to 20, of the promotion days of the Demonstration Areas of these diseases, due to their function as spaces to make known the advances in the control and prevention and the risk factors, in response to the national strategy in force in Cuba until 2025.
According to Dr. Juan Carlos Baster Moro, an official of the NCD Coordinating Department of the Provincial Center of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology, “the demonstration areas, as their name indicates, are mainly focused on Primary Health Care and specifically on polyclinics. In the province, a very broad plan of activities was designed that integrated assistance, epidemiology, teaching and research”.
In Holguín these initiatives are located in accidents and the comprehensive and integrated management of non-communicable diseases, since the latter occupy nine of the first ten causes of death in the country’s health system and in this territory in particular.
As demonstration areas are the founding polyclinic of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program, Alcides Pino Bermúdez, dedicated to the demonstration and prevention of accidents, and within the national advanced network for the HEARTS initiative, the Pedro Díaz Coello polyclinic stands out as a model of care for arterial hypertension.
Regarding the main actions carried out in the province during this period, the official explained that the demonstration areas have shown their best results in promotion, prevention, in the integral approach to these health problems and in the rehabilitation of the patients themselves.
Among the activities that have given prestige to the program are specialized conferences given by leading experts. Among them, the so-called first thousand days of life, where rare diseases can be diagnosed, were highlighted.
An important space was given to the World Population Day and to the demographic dynamics, where the population aging stands out and how from the medical sciences the necessary human resources are formed to approach the emerging health problems presented in the elderly, in their health-disease process and how from the gerontogeriatric formation of the student of the Medicine career this preparation of the doctor graduated from the University of Medical Sciences of Holguin is treated.
The work results obtained with intersectoriality were also decisive in the Health and Quality of Life Council of the province. To these activities was added the defense of the doctoral thesis of the dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Dr. George Augusto Velázquez Zúñiga, who defended a topic related to the competences of the student of this field, based on a form of teaching organization, called integral community work.
So that the results of the demonstration areas based in Holguin, with more than two years of work, indicate the possibility of applying them to other polyclinics of the province and the country.
Therefore, in Baster Moro’s opinion, this day leaves a positive balance for the health sector in the province because all these integral and integrated activities contribute to the transformation of these health problems and of the health framework by constituting an advance in the results that were already being achieved by each one of our polyclinics, he concluded.
