A group of U.S. dermatologists from the company Veradermics, based in Connecticut (USA). Recently announced positive results from a phase three clinical trial of their oral pill, VDPHL01, designed to treat hair loss in men.
VDPHL01 is an extended-release version of minoxidil. A compound that acts directly on hair follicles. In this tablet formulation, the drug is released slowly and steadily via a gel matrix. Aiming for greater efficacy and a lower risk profile.
The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. It involved 536 men, aged 18 to 65, with mild to moderate androgenetic alopecia. Over a six-month period, some participants received an 8.5 mg dose once daily. Others received it twice daily, and a third group received only a placebo. Researchers measured the number of hairs within a specific area and assessed the perceptions of both the patients and the investigators.
After six months, the group taking the medication once daily showed an average increase of 28.6 hairs per square centimeter. While the group taking it twice daily saw an increase of 36.4 hairs. Compared to an increase of only 6.6 hairs in the placebo group. Between 78.8% and 85% of the participants observed a visible improvement.
According to the company, the treatment was generally well-tolerated, and no serious adverse events related to its use were reported. If approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it would be the first oral pill authorized for this condition in nearly 30 years. A highly convenient solution for many patients who would prefer an easy-to-take pill over creams or implants, provided it delivers clear and practical results.
