Yasiel González, an outfielder from Gibara, made his debut this weekend with the Xiamen Dolphins in the Chinese Professional Baseball League, which began last Saturday.
González, playing right field and batting cleanup, went 1-for-3 with an RBI and an intentional walk in the Dolphins’ 9-5 victory over the Shanghai Orcas. On Sunday, he went 0-for-3 in Xiamen’s second win, a 7-3 victory over Changha.
His teammate, José Amauri Noroña, went 2-for-7, including a double, driving in three runs and scoring twice.
Also on Sunday, pitchers Pavel Hernández pitched a scoreless inning. Allowing one hit and one run with one strikeout, and Andy Vargas pitched two-thirds of an inning. Allowing two hits and one walk, though he didn’t allow a run.
The other Holguin native involved in Chinese baseball is manager Noelvis González Matos. Also who works with the Beijing CP Loongs, the team that defeated the Orcas 4-2 on Monday.
In that game, Fran Herrera and Yankiel Mauris pitched one inning for the winners. Each allowing no hits and striking out two, while Fher Cejas earned his first save.
The Chinese Professional Baseball League will extend the qualifying stage until September 19th.
