The Words to the Wind Storytelling Company is focusing its summer season on creating interactive spaces for children and young people. Prioritizing community work and direct interaction with families.
Yoyi Sera, a member of the group’s board, explained to the Cuban News Agency that summer is the ideal time to bring their message to neighborhoods. And to break down the barriers between the artist and the public.
The “Joy in the Park” project, promoted by the Provincial Directorate of Culture, serves as the cornerstone of this strategy. Held in Calixto García Park, the group invites children to participate in activities that go beyond mere observation.
At this event, storytelling is combined with participatory games, improvisations, and express workshops. Also where children become co-creators of the stories. Promoting both a love of reading, intergenerational interaction and respect.
Sera added that the company designed a repertoire of stories and fables specifically for these outdoor gatherings. With themes that address current realities from a playful perspective.
This approach fosters intergenerational dialogue and family integration at each performance. Making each show a space of comfort and joy amidst the complexities of the current situation, she explained.
Moreover the group also extends its reach to outlying communities and nearby settlements. Acting as an effective vehicle for social cohesion and healthy recreation.
As part of this work, the group continues to stage the play “When a Son Leaves” at its headquarters in Pepe Torres’s old house. A play recently presented at the Gibara International Poor Film Festival.
The director described it as a lyrical piece that honors Cuban mothers and, while addressing the sensitive topic of emigration. It is part of the group’s repertoire of offerings, without overshadowing their summer performances in public squares.
The Palabras al Viento (Words to the Wind) Storytelling Company was founded on April 14th, 2004. Its mission is to fuse theater and music in shows that appeal to all ages.
