Cuba Declares Official Mourning for the Death of Qatar’s Father

The President of Cuba declared official mourning for the death of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani. From 6:00 a.m. (local time) today until midnight on July 14th.

During the period of official mourning, the Cuban flag will be flown at half-staff on public buildings and military institutions.

According to a statement broadcast on National Television, the former emir demonstrated a special affection for Cuba and its people. He cultivated a close friendship with the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz. Which cemented the development of the historic relations of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

He was also a promoter of fruitful bilateral collaboration in the health sector, with the Cuban hospital in Dukhan. Inaugurated in his presence on January 10th, 2012. Serving as a symbol of the brotherhood between the two states and peoples.

Also he made several visits to Cuba, and on his first visit, in September 2000. He was awarded the Order of José Martí, the highest distinction bestowed by the Cuban state.

The President of the Republic and First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, previously expressed his condolences to the Qatari people on the death of Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Whom he described as an outstanding statesman and driving force behind the development of the modern and thriving State of Qatar.

Through his social media account, he also highlighted Al Thani’s contributions to the historic ties of friendship and solidarity between the Middle Eastern nation and Cuba.

“He was a dear friend of the Cuban people and of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro,” Díaz-Canel wrote.

Moreover the Prime Minister of the Caribbean island, Manuel Marrero, also extended his heartfelt condolences to the Qatari government and people. Highlighting the Emir’s contributions to the development of friendly relations between the two countries.

For his part, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez also conveyed his deepest condolences to the family of the former Emir. As well as to the government and people of Qatar. And emphasized his contribution to the development of the historic bonds of friendship and solidarity between the two nations.

The death of the former Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, at the age of 74. It brings to a close the career of one of the leaders who most influenced the political, economic, and diplomatic transformation of the Persian Gulf in recent decades.
