Increase in Crimes Against the Electrical System Reported in Holguin

A total of 29 crimes against the electrical system were registered in the province of Holguin during the first half of 2026. Representing an increase of 10 incidents compared to the same period of the previous year. Reported Luisa Griffith Hechavarría, Director of Security and Protection for the Holguin Electric Company.

The most frequent types of crimes are theft of electrical conductors. Theft of dielectric oil from transformers, and the removal of angle brackets from 110 kV metal structures, the director specified.

Also the municipalities of Banes, Mayari, Moa, and Baguanos account for the largest number of incidents. Banes is the most affected by the theft of angle brackets from high-voltage towers. While Mayari, Moa, and Baguanos are the most affected by the theft of dielectric oil from transformers.

Three burglaries have been reported at solar parks in the province. In which criminals removed electrical conductors from inverters. Other crimes reported include the theft of perimeter fencing, streetlights, and steel, batteries, guy wire, and concrete poles.

In response to this situation, the Holguin Electric Company, in coordination with the Ministry of the Interior. It has conducted operations that have led to the arrest of several individuals involved in these crimes. Which are considered to have a significant negative social and economic impact on the province.

As a protective measure, security has been reinforced at electrical installations with the addition of guards at 22 33 kV sub-transmission substations. Many of which are located in mountainous and difficult-to-access areas where there was previously no permanent security.

The Electric Company, on its Facebook page, called on the public to collaborate in protecting the electrical system. And to report any suspicious activity, as these crimes not only cause significant economic damage. Also directly affect the service received by the people of Holguin.
